POAGE, Robert

Name POAGE, Robert Gender Male Note - Came to Virginia by way of Philadelphia in or before 1739, came from Ireland. Robert Poage settled on a plantation of 772 acres three miles north of Stauton which he muxt have prchased from William Beverley as it was in Beverley Manor. H also in 1742 aquired 306 acres directly from the Government, the patent executed by Lieutenant Governor Gooch. He is said to have donated the land on which Augusta Stone Church (at Fort Defiance, Va.) stands, was an elder in its first session an a justice in the first Commision of the Peace of Augusta County (County Court) October 30, 1745
Two partial lists of the children of Robert Poage are extant, one in the record of his importation which names nine, the other in his will, dated October 20, 1773 and probated March 6, 1774, which names eight but omits two daughters, Sarah, wife of Thomas Gordon, and Mary, wife of Robert Breckenridge, both of whom predeceased their father; Mary is known to have died young.
The order of these children is not known. It is assumed that all of them were born in Ireland, except Thomas, who is not listed in the importation roll and, it is supposed, was born in Virginia.
