The decorations including the Jantzen Diving Girl medallion were sculpted by Gabriel Lavare a Portland sculptor. All of the medallions found in all three construction stages are from the same mold which was retained for this purpose. According to an article in the Vancouver Columbian April 4th 1925; Vol XVII No. 151 Page 1 Column 8; paragraph 5 "The [Columbia Terra Cotta] company is just completing a order for the new Jantzen Knitting Company building in Portland consisting of a large front with three life-sized figures of diving girls and a number of decorating designs depicting the old man of the sea; mermaids; fish and other decorative material all done in colors..." And according to History of Jantzen By John A. Zehntbauer President of the company Page 75 "In April 1925 the Broadway store was remodeled and enlarged and a very fine front of terra cotta was built. This improvement cost about 20 thousand dollars" And Page 95: "1928 was the first year in our history without a retail store: the last store being disposed of during the year 1927".
